Ford Transit Custom PHEV Announced

In 2019 Ford will be paving their way onto the Plug-in market with a Transit Custom PHEV variant.

Transit Custom PHEV

Ford redesigned the Transit in 2018, with a warm reception. Now, they are looking to expand the engine range with a PHEV model. We have seen PHEV Transit Custom prototypes in the past, but production plans haven’t been confirmed until now.

Sitting afront is a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. Electric power alone gives the van a 30 mile range, which it does whilst emitting zero emissions. Range anxiety is not an issue for the Transit, for the petrol engine helps bring the total range to 310 miles.

Recharging the battery can happen on the move, thanks to the regenerative braking facility. Driver’s can choose from three different driving modes:

  • EV Auto – a default setting that determines how to balance the power types
  • EV Now – a mode solely using the electric power until depleted
  • EV Later – the system will try to keep the battery level at the same level of charge

Dependant on the type of charger being used, it takes three to five hours to charge up the van. A warning will display on the trip computer if vehicle is still plugged in to a charged point, or if the battery is nearly empty.

The Chief Programme Enginner, Ian Porter, said:

“The Transit Custom PHEV re-writes the rule book for a general purpose 1-tonne van, providing a versatile performer with zero-emission capability. Transit Custom PHEV demands no compromises, offering the same load capacity as a diesel van, and the freedom to complete long-distance journeys without the need to stop for a charge.”.
